Smilin Eli holds on in $153,225 Matron Trot
Smilin Eli and driver Tim Tetrick just held off Tirade Hanover to post a neck victory and tie the track record at Dover Downs in winning the $153,225 Matron Stake Sunday for three-year-old trotting colts.
The final Matron Stake on the card saw Bluto and driver Andy Miller first on the lead but by the opening quarter mile in :27.2, Tetrick had Smilin Eli in gear and in command.
They raced Indian-style to the half mile in :56 before Tirade Hanover and driver Yannick Gingras came first-over and started working their way up from fourth to third to second place by the three-quarter pole in 1:24.1.
As they started down the stretch Tirade Hanover had nearly collared Smilin Eli but Smilin Eli was able to dig in and hold off Tirade Hanover to the wire. Possessed Fashion (Brian Sears) had closed well to be third.
�It is hard for a horse that never raced at two,� Said Tetrick. �In just his second or third start he trotted in 1:52. He has done really well. He has made a lot of money racing against the best colts in the nation. He has been in every dance. It�s great that he won this one and goes out a winner this year. Now he should come back as a great four-year-old. He was real green when he first started out and he still has a lot to learn about racing. He has plenty of talent and a lot of speed. But he has had a great year, made a lot of money, finished second in the Hambletonian. I�m real happy with the horse. He�s tough. He does not want to let another horse get by him. He has been pretty good all year.�
Trained by David Smith and bred and owned by Nicholas Cimino of Pompano Beach, Fl, it was the sixth win this year for Smilin Eli, who is sired by Muscles Yankee. His time of 1:52.4 tied the track record set in 2011 by Big Riggs. Sent off as the 2/5 favorite, Smilin Eli paid $2.80 to win.
�Winning is always nice,� David Smith said. �This colt is perfect gaited, very strong but he is not well educated and still needs to learn. We are going to race him at four. They have all these big races at the Meadowlands for four-year-olds. I don�t think he is ready for the aged horses but there are a lot of races for four-year-olds. And that is where he belongs.
