Smilin Eli has it easy in Matron elimination
It was as easy as just getting to the front and never looking back.
Smilin Eli and driver Tim Tetrick did just that in winning the $51,075 elimination division for the Matron Stakes for three-year-old trotting colts and geldings Sunday at Dover Downs.
Leaving from post three, Smilin Eli was able to take the early lead away from Bluto (Andy Miller) by the opening quarter mile in :27.3 and then held the field at bay the rest of the one mile race, leading to the half mile in :56.2 and the three-quarters in 1:25.2. Dontyouforgetit (Yannick Gingras) tried coming first-over at the half mile with All Laid Out (David Miller) second over but they never posed a threat.
Coming down the stretch, Smilin Eli won with ease by two open lengths over Pluto in 1:53.1. Possessed Fashion (Brian Sears) was third. Also making it to next week�s $140,000 Matron final are All Laid Out, Six Gun Hall, Tirade Hanover, Crazy About Pat and Sailer Eddie.
For Smilin Eli, a son of Muscles Yankee, it was his fifth win this year. He is trained by David Smith for owner/breeder Nick Cimino of Pompano Beach, FL. He paid $4.00 to win as the betting favorite.
