I Can Doosit: 2011 Interdom Trotting Champ

Rolleston harness racing trainer Mark Purdon claimed his third Inter Dominion Trotting Crown at Alexandra Park tonight (Friday April 8) when I Can Doosit came from a second row draw to win the coveted Group One $250,000 event.

Purdon also won back-to-back Trotting Championships with Pride Of Petite in 1996 and 1997. He drove the mare to win in 1996 and then the following year the American-bred was reined by Purdon's brother-in-law Tony Herlihy.

Tonight I Can Doosit, who wasn't fancied at $11.90 for the win, got a lovely drag into the race at just the right time behind Raydon and Herlihy. Purdon believed that was the winning of the race.

"Everything went according to plan. We got a really nice trip following Raydon into the race. I thought he could take me where I needed to be and he did exactly that. Mind you I was never confident of winning until just short of the line," said driver Purdon who co-trains I Can Doosit with Grant Payne in Canterbury.

I Can Doosit overhauled hot favourite and Australian squaregaiter Let Me Thru (Chris Lang junior) just short of the line. He got up by a neck with a further neck back to Stylish Monarch (Ricky May).

The winning time was 3:23 (mile rate: 2:05) with final 800m and 400m sectionals of 57.1 and 28.5 seconds.

Purdon was delighted with the way the 5-year-old son of Muscles Yankee had progressed through the Series.

"He had two tough trips during the heats and to be on hindsight he's handled the Series particularly well. He tries very hard but to be blatantly honest I did not expect to beat Let Me Thru," Purdon said.

"This is a great for owners who are truly wonderful supporters of our stable," he added.

Those owners are Ken and Karen Breckon, of Breckon Farms in the Waikato. Breckon is also the vice president of the Auckland Trotting Club.

Ken's mother Doos was also on track (see photo) to see the horse named after her win his 15th career start from 29 starts. . He's also placed five times for just over $426,000 in stakes.

I Can Doosit will now be prepared for next month's prestigious Group One Rowe Cup.

Swedish mare wins Trotters Consolation

"A great result for harness racing and a tremendous result for trotting both here in New Zealand and throughout the world!" That was the post-race comment from the chief executive of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club Shane Gloury after Swedish mare, Annicka, won the $30,000 Inter Dominion Trotters Consolation Final at Alexandra Park tonight (Friday April 8).

The talented 5-year-old daughter of Spotlite Lobell arrived in New Zealand last month with a big reputation and she didn't let her army of Swedish fans, who were on track, down tonight.

"She has got better and stronger as the Series has developed. I will never forget tonight's win," said driver Jorgen Westholm.

The 5-year-old lobbed the trail and proved too powerful in the home straight winning by a neck and three quarters of a length from place-getters Mon Star (Ricky May) and Australian Ronerail (Grant Campbell).

She trotted the 2700m mobile in 3:25.1 (mile rate: 2:02.3) with final 800m and 400m sectionals of 58.2 and 29.2 seconds.

Westholm said the win was even more meritorious considering Annicka had suffered stomach problems this month.

"I thought she might be a winning chance tonight because she felt good in the preliminary.She is a very speedy horse and she also felt exceptional during the race. That made me very confident," Westholm said.

And we haven't seen the last of Annicka just yet. Westholm said the New Zealand hospitality was so good he was in no hurry to leave.

"We will definitely be back here racing more horses ‘Down Under'. The owners have had a great time here and this has just capped it all off. What a great place to race," Westholm said.

Annicka will race at Alexandra Park again in a couple of weeks before heading south to race at Addington Raceway.

Annicka has now won 13 of her 36 starts and placed nine times for just over $600,000 in career stakes.
