Royalty For Life and Your So Vain win Kentucky Futurity elims
Fourteen of the sport's finest 3-year-old male trotters competed in Sunday�s $527,000 Kentucky Futurity, the third leg of Trotting's Triple Crown, at The Red Mile in Lexington.
The day started off with two $79,050 eliminations, with the top five in each advancing to the $368,900 final later on the program.
In the opening elimination, Alfred Ross, Ray Campbell, Jr. and Paul Fontaine's Hambletonian champion Royalty For Life was a wire-to-wire winner in 1:53.3 over a sloppy track. Brian Sears was in the bike for trainer George Ducharme as the son of RC Royalty-Bourbon �N Grits won for the seventh time this year.
Starting from post four, Royalty For Life ($3.60) grabbed the front end and would not be caught through fractions of :28, :56.2 and 1:25.2. He trotted a final quarter in :28.1 to hold off Creatine (Mike Lachance) by one length, with E L Rocket (Yannick Gingras) third.
Your So Vain trotted a :28.2 final quarter to defeat Spider Blue Chip in the second elimination. |
Punxsutawney and Home Turf, the fourth and fifth place finishers in that elimination, also qualified for the final.
The second elimination saw P G Van Camp Stables' Your So Vain take over the lead at the half-mile marker and go on to a 1:54.4 victory. Tim Tetrick piloted the Brad Maxwell trainee to his fifth win in 10 starts this year. The winner is a son of Donato Hanover-Tennis Lover.
Spider Blue Chip (Ron Pierce) was the early leader and took the field to the opening quarter in :29.4 with Lindy's Tru Grit (Scott Zeron) second and Your So Vain third. Tetrick sent his mount to the lead heading to the half-mile marker and they were first on the rim at that point in :59.
Your So Vain trotted a :27.2 third quarter in hitting that pole in 1:26.2 with All Laid Out (Corey Callahan) challenging on the outside. But Your So Vain was game and he put in a final panel of :28.2 in hitting the wire in 1:54.4. Spider Blue Chip shook loose late to finish second and All Laid Out was third.
Lindy's Tru Grit and Wheeling N Dealin, the fourth and fifth place finishers in that elimination, also qualified for the final.

Creatine wins 121st Kentucky Futurity

Diamond Creek Racing's Creatine, who finished second in his first heat elimination, came charging down the lane in the $368,900 second heat final and held off All Laid Out at the wire in a time of 1:53.2 over a sloppy track.
Hall of Fame driver Mike Lachance won his fourth (and second straight) Kentucky Futurity title (he piloted My MVP to the crown in 2012) as he was in the bike for trainer Bob Stewart. The win was the seventh in 13 starts this year for Creatine, who lifted his 2013 bankroll to $481,189.
First heat winner Royalty For Life (Brian Sears) cut the fractions in the final, taking the field to the opening quarter in :27.4, the half in :55.4 and the three-quarters in 1:24, with Spider Blue Chip (Ron Pierce) sitting in the pocket and Your So Vain (Tim Tetrick), the other first heat victor, in third. Meanwhile, Creatine was biding his time in fourth.
Your So Vain was the first to move as he came first over at the three-quarter pole to engage Royalty For Life. But it was Creatine who had the most trot in the lane and Lachance moved him to the front, then held off a late rush from All Laid Out (David Miller) to capture the crown and a seat in the floral chair for his connections.
Spider Blue Chip wound up third, Your So Vain was fourth and Royalty For Life faded to fifth.
