Broadway Schooner had won only once in nine career starts, but Palone sent the Arlene and Jules Siegel homebred daughter of Broadway Hall-Pine Schooner to the lead, which she retained without serious challenge. Caviar Forthe Lady was 3-1/4 lengths back in second, with Give N Take third. The time erased the previous stake record of 1:55 established by Michelles Angel and Palone in 2007.
I never even popped the earplugs, Palone said. You dont want to know how fast they can go until you have to, but let me assure you, she has wicked speed.
Trainer Jim Campbell attributed the fillys improvement to maturity and the dedication of her caretaker, Walter Teat.
She had a problem last year
putting everything together, Campbell said.
She came back better this year, but we had a
little setback when she was nearly ready and got
sick. Im especially happy because Walter worked
so hard on her. To see the look on his face
tonight, that was priceless.
Whispering Wind rebounded from
disappointing performances in the Currier &
Ives, where she finished fourth in both her
elimination and the final. In the Meadow Bright,
she sustained a first-over bid for Mike Simons
that carried her to victory in 1:55.4, 4-1/2
lengths better than Caviar Russe. Jane ODonnell
was third.
We went with pop-out earplugs
and took the hood off tonight. She was a little
sharper, said Roland Mallar, who trains the
Michael Andrew homebred daughter of
Broadway Hall-Wild Pine. With the trip
she had in the Currier & Ives, I felt she should
have won. But thats racing. She did bounce
back. Lets hope shes on the right track
again.
Gurfein gave Musical Mystery,
winner of a Breeders Crown elimination last year,
three qualifiers to prepare for her season debut
Wednesday but not because she wasnt race
ready.
Shes been training well, but I couldnt find a race for her. Gurfein said. She has too much money on her card and too many wins. The only race she could get into would be against aged horses, which I didnt want to do, or go in a 3-year-old open; that one never filled.
She was really good last year. She had a tough trip in the Breeders Crown final she should have been one, two or three. Shes eligible for all the big stakes; whether she goes or not, shell tell me.
In the Meadow Bright, the daughter of Cantab Hall-Musical Victory made an easy lead and drew off to triumph by 4 lengths over Daddys Lhasa, with Misty Mollymorning third. The winning time was 1:56.1
