shine in Ohio Sires Stakes at Scioto Downs
Scioto Downs hosted the Ohio Sires Stakes on a special Monday (May 26) Memorial Day card.
The first Sires Stakes event was race five on the 15-race card and it was the first division of 3-year-old trotting colts. A field of 10 went to post for the $40,000 purse and Can’tcutthatchip for trainer Jim Dailey didn’t disappoint. Can’tcutthatchip is a 3-year-old by Chip Chip Hooray, owned by Kathy Ratcliff and Jerry Zosel.
Driver Jason Brewer was unrushed in the early going, but when Brewer moved him, the colt responded. Can’tcutthatchip won by four lengths in 1:58.2.
The final Sires Stakes event came in race 11. A full field of 10 was set for the second division of 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings. Rompaway Galaxy was the heavy favorite and showed that he deserved to be as the son of Rompaway Wally was at odds of 1-2.
Regular driver Mike Micallef was in the bike for trainer Krista Harmon. Micallef and his colt were content to sit off the early quick fractions. When the half flashed up in :57.1, Micallef pulled from the three hole and quickly had the lead. He passed the three- quarters in 1:26.3 and the colt opened up on the rest of the field. Rompaway Galaxy set a new lifetime best of 1:55.4 and did so by a 14-1/2 length margin.
