Despite late-race pressure Jula Shes Magic prevailed narrowly in the $225,000 Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Super Final for two-year-old trotting fillies on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Jula Shes Magic moved for the top with pylon-starter Winter Olympics sitting second to a :28.2 opening quarter. Wine Rack Hanover, racing fifth, ventured uncovered into the backside and crept towards Jula Shes Magic through a :57.1 half and three-quarters in 1:26.
Driver Jody Jamieson urged Jula Shes Magic through the stretch to hold the lead as Wine Rack Hanover slimmed the leader’s margin heading to the finish with stablemate She Rocks Kemp closing late. But Jula Shes Magic, veering inside pylons briefly at the finish, kept Wine Rack Hanover at bay to win while She Rocks Kemp took third.
“She’s still really green, this filly,” said Jamieson, who won his first Super Final since steering two-year-old trotting filly Daneille Hall to victory in 2014. “She’s really a lot better on the lead. I kind of screwed up a little bit going the second quarter a little too fast but she felt comfortable and I let her do her thing. Around the last turn she was running in pretty good so right at the very end I had to throw everything at her but the kitchen sink—and I think I threw that too. She went inside the one pylon but like [the judges] said I didn’t get an unfair advantage.
“She’s just a great filly,’ Jamieson also said of the daughter of Kadabra. “I mean, [1]:55 a couple weeks ago was a Canadian season’s mark and it just speaks of the work that Susie [Kerwood] has done with the horse and Rene [Dion] and the connections. They’ve just done a great job with this filly.”
Owned by Jula Racing Inc., Jula Shes Magic won her third race from 10 starts, earning $208,612. Susie Kerwood conditions the $8.40 winner whose next start could come in the Breeders Crown.
“I think she showed in some open stakes—the Champlain I think it was and the Peaceful Way; she just had a bad day in the Peaceful Way,” Jamieson said. “I mean I’ve had a bunch of those this summer so I didn’t blame her too much. Although it’s a bad time to have a bad day going for $400,000. I’m sure if she’s coming out of this race good they might give her a shot.”
