Longshots dominated the two $96,400 divisions of the Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Gold for two-year-old filly trotters at Flamboro Downs on Tuesday, Sept. 25 with Blue Magic going wire to wire at 16-1 and Tommi Canu Hearme overcoming post eight at 13-1.
Upsetting at 39-1 in the Champlain at Mohawk, Tommi Canu Hearme set off the toteboard again but this time with a 2:01.2 victory in the second OSS division.
Petro Hall opened a four-length margin on the front through a :29.4 opening quarter as driver Chris Christoforou tucked into third about eight lengths from the lead. Stalking a :59.4 half and three-quarters in 1:29.3, Tommi Canu Hearme gained ground from third and sat within four lengths of the lead turning into the stretch. The R. Dustin Jones trainee swept past Petro Hall through the lane to win a length on the line while Petro Hall held second from pocket-rider Champagne Jane.
Owned by Dustin Jones Stables Inc., Hebert Horses Inc. and Sjoblom Racing Stable, Tommi Canu Hearme, by Royalty For Life, won her second race in seven starts, earning $95,042. She paid $28.60 to win.
Blue Magic, a Susie Kerwood-trained filly by Kadabra, held on narrowly to wire the first OSS split in 1:59.4.
Driver Louis Philippe-Roy took a three-length lead with Blue Magic as Witches N Angels tracked from the pocket through a :27.4 opening quarter and expanding to a four-and-a-half length lead by the half in :57.1. Odds-on favourite Teddys Littleangel, positioned nine lengths off the lead from third, went on a gallop heading to three-quarters as Witches N Angels cut Blue Magic’s lead to two lengths through a 1:27 clip. The pocket-sitter pounced on Blue Magic into the stretch but finished a neck shy of victory as Teddys Littleangel checked in third eight lengths behind.
Returning $35.10 to win, Blue Magic, owned by Tommy Andersson, won her second race in seven starts, earning $68,221.
