Lifetime Royalty was one of the few in his $52,200 OSS Gold Series division to mind his manners, and as a result he was able to make a down payment on his $100,000 price tag from last year’s Lexington Selected Yearling Sale.
Doug McNair got away eighth with the Scott McEneny trainee while Around Town shot to the top and sliced out fractions of :29, 1:00 and 1:31. Lifetime Royalty picked up positions in the second and third quarters of the mile when others made breaks, and he then used a :29.1 closing quarter to propel himself to the win by 1-1/4 lengths over race favourite Knight Angel in 2:01. Isnt He An Angel was third.
McEneny shares ownership on the son of Royalty For Life-Cha Cha Glide with Brad Grant of Milton and Martwest Racing Stable of Mississauga.
Dream Nation is 2-for-2 to kick off his career thanks to a handy victory in the second division for driver Louis Philippe Roy and trainer Jacques Dupont.
Roy was in no hurry early as he managed to find his gelding a seven-hole trip to the opening quarter, which was carved out by Southwind Frost in :29.3. The leader miscued going into the backstretch, however, and that left the lead to Tymal Tullo. The new leader scooted to the half in 1:01.3 before being overtaken going into the final turn by CT Conabra. Dream Nation tracked that foe and was left first-over chasing him to the three-quarter pole in 1:30.3. Roy hustled Dream Nation to the lead as the field came into the lane, and the youngster’s :29-second closing quarter earned him the win by 4-1/2 lengths over Tymal Tullo in 1:59.4. Tennessee Titan came on strong to finish third.
Sent off as the 1-2 favourite, the son of Archangel-Mississippi Dream pushed his lifetime earnings to $33,100 with the win for the partnership of Les Ecuries Dorleans Inc, Ecurie CSL, Gestion C Levesque 2005inc and Marc Camirand.
Southwind Avenger also took the conservative approach to winning his OSS Gold Series division for driver Trevor Henry and trainer Richard ‘Nifty’ Norman.
The son of E L Titan-Auvergne got away fifth while Archway shot to the top and threw down the opening quarter in :30. Bail Out swept from third to first in the backstretch and had the field chasing him to the half in 1:00. Archway was back out and driving around the final turn, and he pressed Bail Out to the three-quarter pole in 1:30.1. Southwind Avenger was on the move tracking cover, and when he swung wide in the stretch he then kicked home in :29.2 to win by 3-1/2 lengths over While Your Up in 1:59.4. Archway settled for third prize.
Mel Hartman, David Mc Duffee and Little E LLC share ownership on the first-time starter who was a $77,000 purchase from last year’s Lexington Selected Yearling Sale.
Forbidden Trade kept the ‘come from behind’ streak alive thanks to his eye-catching tally in the final division for teamster Bob McClure and conditioner Luc Blais.
The regally-bred son of Kadabra-Pure Ivory got away eighth while Tymal Houdini headed to the early lead and had the field chasing him past the quarter pole in :29. Magical Winner K stepped around that foe and battled with favourite Jumpshot to the half in :59.2. Jumpshot eventually worked his way to the top, but he couldn’t seal the deal. Forbidden Trade, who was still seventh heading into the final quarter of the contest, fired home in :28 and won by a half-length margin over Tymal Houdini in 1:59.2. Jumpshot had to settle for third prize.
Sent off at odds of 15-1, the colt won his pari-mutuel debut for Determination of Montreal, QC. The youngster was purchased for $110,000 from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.
