Odds On Amethyst dominates Open Trot at The Meadowlands
No Melady’s Monet, no problem, that has been the theme for Odds On Amethyst over the past month and that theme continued Friday night (March 27) at The Meadowlands.
In his last five starts, Odds On Amethyst has faced Melady’s Monet twice, losing both races. In his other three starts, he has found the winner’s circle, including Friday night at The Big M.
Assigned the outside post in the field of eight, Odds On Amethyst was a 4-5 favorite in the $30,000 Open Trot with Brett Miller in the bike. He showed his customary speed from the onset and took the early initiative through a quarter in :27.1 and a half-mile in :56.1.
At that point, the favorite faced a challenge from the Ron Burke trained mare Handover Belle, making her second start off the layoff. She pressed the tempo with Appomattox drafting in the pocket throughout. Tag Up And Go sat second over on the far turn, followed by Modest Price, who fanned wide through three-quarters of 1:24.2 while commencing a rally.
But as the field of Open trotters straightened away in the stretch, it was clear this race belonged to Odds On Amethyst as he opened up on the field at will, winning by open lengths in 1:52.3. Appomattox was able to save the runner-up spot, while Modest Prince rallied to be third.
Odds On Amethyst is owned by Diamond Creek Racing and trained by Jimmy Takter. He is nominated to the Arthur J. Cutler Memorial, which kicks off the Championship Meet at the Meadowlands, with the eliminations on May 9 and the final on May 16.

Melady's Monet wins Meadowlands feature, invited to Elitlopp
The $27,500 Open was again won by this winter's trotting star Melady’s Monet in another long, uncovered grind for John Campbell in 1:54.1.
Away sixth and last from his outside post, Melady’s Monet sat until the field neared the half with Winds Of The North enjoying an uncontested lead in 56.4. Campbell eased the 1-5 favorite to the outside, slowly working his way up to the lead and by the 1:26.1 three quarters had gained even terms.
Melady’s Monet went on by willingly and was edging clear to a length margin as they neared the wire. Winds Of The North held well for the place.
Kevin McDermott trains the winner for Melady Enterprises LLC of Pompano Beach, Fla. It was disclosed by Swedish representatives last week that Melady’s Monet has been extended an invitation to compete in the 2015 Elitlopp at Solvalla Racetrack on Sunday, May 31.

Meladys Monet Wins Meadowlands Open
Meladys Monet overcome an uncovered trip in blustery conditions to return to his winning ways in the $27,500 Open Handicap Trot on Friday night, March 6, at The Meadowlands.
Driver John Campbell used a quick backstretch move around cloggers and Meladys Monet trotted right up to race favourite DWs NY Yank as that one eased through a :59 middle half. Once Meladys Monet headed the leader, he kicked home in a powerful :26.3 for the 1:52.4 score. Lindys Tru Grit rallied late to finish second and DWs NY Yank held on for third-place.
Meladys Monet had won five of six starts earlier in the meet. He briefly went to the sidelines in January with what trainer Kevin McDermott described as a quarter crack. The gelded son of Revenue S returned in spectacular fashion, defeating the top class of trotters by three lengths with a powerful stretch drive. He seemed to tail off from there, finishing a dull fifth in his next start before a sick scratch and a fourth-place finish one week ago. But tonight, Meladys Monet returned to his best form, equalling his seasonal mark of 1:52.4 with the compelling victory.
McDermott trains the winner for Melady Enterprises LLC of Pompano Beach, Florida. The connections of Meladys Monet have staked him to the Meadowlands Free For All Trot Stake Program, including the Arthur Cutler Memorial, John Cashman Memorial and TVG Free For All Trotting Championship.
Corey Callahan scored three wins on the program as his winter to remember continues. Callahan is currently the leading money-winning driver in the U.S. and sits third in the race for most wins.
Andy and Julie Miller teamed up for a pair of wins on the program, as did Jim Marohn Jr., who is having a breakout season at The Meadowlands and Rob Harmon.
The fifth race 20-cent Jackpot Super Hi-5 returned $4,824 for two winning tickets, but the jackpot remains unclaimed with a carryover into the Saturday program of $44,210.71. The 13th race Jackpot also carried over into the Saturday program. That carryover now stands at $154,649.
The 13-race Saturday program consists of the second round of the Buddy Gilmour Series, which features the intriguing match-up of Wiggle It JiggleIt against National Seelster. Post time is 7:15 p.m.

Pair Of Opens Featured At Meadowlands
The Meadowlands offered twin $30,000 Open features on a brisk late February, Friday night.
Odds On Amethyst took the top class trot for the second time this season with a start to finish romp in 1:52 for Brett Miller.
Miller set his charge away sharply from post eight and crossed over instantly. Odds On Amethyst set honest fractions, fought off a legitimate bid from Meladys Monet through a grueling :27.3 third panel then held sway for the win. B Yoyo sat a tight pocket throughout, menaced the winner late and held well for the place, with DWs NY Yank surviving an adventurous trip from the far outside to be third in his first seasonal start.
The winner returned $9.20 and the exacta a healthy $122.60. Jimmy Takter trains for Diamond Creek Racing.
The Open Mare Pace went to Inittowinafortune and Corey Callahan in an identical time of 1:52.
Callahan fashioned an ideal second-over trip then rallied the mare late from just off the pace to track down Radar Contact after a stretch-long battle and prevail in a photo.
Inittowinafortune returned $18.40 while winning her third straight for owner Mike Pagonas and trainer Mike Russo. It was Callahan's third winner of the night.
In wagering news, the Hi 5 Jackpot carried over in the fifth race at $37,167 and the last race Jackpot eclipsed $142,000 going into tomorrow night’s program.
The Saturday card features three Winter Series finals among the 13 races. Post time is 7:15 p.m.

Lindy's Tru Grit wins Open Trot at The Meadowlands
The complexion of the featured $30,000 Open Trot on Friday night (Feb. 20) at The Meadowlands changed dramatically with the scratch of morning line favorite Melady's Monet. That left the role of the favorite in the hands of the entry, Lindy's Tru Grit and Master Of Law, sent off at 4-5.
Neither was interested in mixing it up early, as Coffeecake Hanover showed good speed, but she quickly conceded the lead to Appomattox heading to the opening quarter in 28.1. Team Six, who established position third on the pylons, made a move heading to the three-eighths pole and took over command down the backstretch. He would lead the field through a 56.3 half-mile. Lindy's Tru Grit began to roll moving into the far turn and challenged Team Six with a first-over grind through to the three-quarters in 1:25.1. His entry-mate, Master Of Law, tracked his cover into the stretch. Team Six came up empty in the lane as Lindy's Tru Grit wrestled the lead away and sprinted to the wire with Master Of Law in hot pursuit. They trotted to the wire together, with Lindy's Tru Grit prevailing by a neck in 1:53.2. Coffeecake Hanover raced very well, trotting strongly through the stretch, emerging from in between horses to finish third.
The win was the second of the season for Lindy's Tru Grit, driven by Andy Miller for his wife, trainer Julie Miller and owners Lindy Racing Stable and Robert Rudolph.
A claiming mini-series for trotters with a claiming price of $12,500 was contested on Friday night at The Meadowlands as well, split in three divisions, with the top three finishers from each division and one fourth place finisher (drawn by lot), advancing to a $20,000 final next week.
The first $7,000 division went to Fuel Cell (Corey Callahan), with Powerful Valor and Without A Clue guaranteeing spots in the final. The second division saw Fox Valley Legend (Jimmy Marohn Jr.) power through from in between horses to score. That gelding was claimed by trainer Scott Didomenico. Pocket Passer and Dash For The Cash also advanced to the final. The final division saw a 14-1 upset in the form of Northern Mattador (Scott Zeron), with Casanova Lindy and Free Rollin also qualifying for the final. The fourth place finishers hoping to join the nine automatic qualifiers are Keystone Wallace, Somolli Pirate and Marquesas.

Big night for Brett Miller at Big M
Making a name yourself in The Meadowlands driving colony is no easy task. But Brett Miller has been making it look easy.
Miller would spot-drive at The Meadowlands in 2014 when some of the top drivers were out of town and Miller did quite well. Making the move to drive at The Big M on a regular basis has proven to be a great one as coming into Friday night (Feb. 13), Miller sat fourth in the driver standings, behind just Yannick Gingras, Dave Miller and Tim Tetrick. He gained on all three of those rivals with four winners on the Friday program, including a pair of upsets in the two featured events.
The top-trotting level this winter meet at The Meadowlands has belonged to Melady's Monet, winning five of six starts, including a three length romp just one week ago. On Friday, he was sent off as the 3/5 betting choice, but this night would belong to another trotter.
Driver John Campbell was content to allow Meladay's Monet to settle into last position early on in the field of six in the $27,500 Open Trot. Lindy's Tru Grit was sent to the lead by Andy Miller and would proceed to cut the mile, setting fractions of 28, 56.4 and 1:24.4. Odds On Amethyst tracked the leader from the pocket throughout the mile and set sights on the leader in the stretch.
Meanwhile, Melady's Monet still had plenty of work to do, five lengths off the speed as the field turned for home. Brett Miller and Odds On Amethyst turned the perfect trip into an upset victory as they scored at 5-1 in 1:52.3. Lindy's Tru Grit saved the runner-up spot with Coffeecake Hanover trotting well to be third. Favored Melady's Monet put forth his first disappointing effort of the season, finishing fifth as the 3/5 favorite.

The second round of the Burning Point Series for pacing mares was contested Friday night as well. Witch Dali, the Worldly Beauty champion, who finished third in round one of this series last week was sent off as the even-money favorite. The entry of Southwind Serenity and Donttellruss for Ron Burke was the 7/5 second choice.
Witch Dali was aggressive from the start, sending hard from post seven with Dave Miller and making an easy lead through an opening quarter of 26.4. The mare would take the field to the three-quarter pole, through fractions of 55.4 and 1:24.1 before seeing pressure from a first-over Southwind Serenity. Witch Dali tried to fight back, but she had no answer for the Burke trainee and conceded in the stretch as Southwind Serenity took over the lead in mid-stretch.
But the race was far from over, as round one winner, Empress Deo, who was tracking Southwind Serenity, loomed boldly just off the lead. Brett Miller guided his mare off that cover and the instant she saw racetrack, she responded again and chased down Southwind Serenity to win again, in 1:51.3. Empress Deo is now in the position to sweep the Burning Point series when she races in the $50,600 Final on Saturday, Feb. 21. Somenicebeach raced well to finish third.

Melady’s Monet returns in style
The trotter that had stolen the show this winter at The Meadowlands had been conspicuous by his absence for the last four weeks.
Melady's Monet had not been seen since winning the top-level trot on Jan. 2. Trainer Kevin McDermott reported the gelding suffered a quarter crack and was given time to heal and freshen up. There was no evidence of any lingering affects of that quarter crack Friday night (Jan. 30) at The Meadowlands.
Sent off as the 4-5 favorite, Melady's Monet was allowed to settle in last in the field of seven and remained there as the field rolled through tepid fractions of :28.2 and :57.1, established by Modest Prince.
Still last turning for home through three-quarters of 1:25.1, Melady's Monet saw Lindy's Tru Grit, who he was tracking on the outer flow, go off-stride directly in front of him. That was no problem either as the Tim Tetrick driven trotter towered up and powered home through the stretch while Tetrick remained motionless at all times to win going away into extremely strong headwinds, completing the mile in 1:55.1. Take My Picture rallied to be second while Team Six raced well uncovered in finishing third.

The Dash For The "C" Notes for trotters returned Friday night at The Meadowlands as well, featuring six divisions, providing very competitive racing as only a win in your division guaranteed a spot in the $25,000 final next week. The remaining four finalists are to be drawn by lot from the second place finishers in the six divisions.
The divisional winners were Captain Primeau (1:57.3-Ron Pierce), Perfect Picture (1:57.3-Pierce), My Muscleman (1:55.3-Brett Miller), Bluebird Kidsqueen (1:56.4–Eric Abbatiello), Rock Of Cashel (1:55.3–Alan Richardson) and Scorcher Hall (1:56–Andy Miller).
The second place finishers were comprised of Walltocousins, Mr Fenwick, Grey Ice, Worth The Money As, Most Wanted Lindy and Lauderdale. Four of these six runner-up trotters will complete the field of 10 for the $25,000 “C” Note final next week, with the four being drawn by lot.

Lindy's Tru Grit keeps on winning
Lindy’s Tru Grit, who just one month ago was struggling to stay trotting at the C-1 level, scored his third consecutive victory since the addition of trotting hobbles Friday night (Jan. 9) at The Meadowlands, defeating some of the best trotters on the grounds, winning the Free For All Handicap in a lifetime-best 1:52.1.
Sent off as the 2-1 favorite, Lindy’s Tru Grit left for position from his inside post and was allowed to sit the pocket behind the pace-setting Odds On Amethyst who cut the mile through fractions of 27.3, 55.2 and 1:23.1.
The outer flow never developed as Appomattox attempted to rally first-over, but never got close to the leaders and Odds On Amethyst was able to lead the field all the way into the stretch. That enabled Lindy’s Tru Grit to pull the pocket nearing the top of the stretch, then rally to the outside of Odds On Amethyst who he wore down coming down to the wire and scored the victory with Andy Miller in the bike. Upfront Billy maintained his position in third throughout the mile.

Melady's Monet back on top at The Meadowlands
Melady's Monet saw his three race win streak snapped when he ran into Appomattox last time in the Free For All Handicap Trot at The Meadowlands. Friday night (Jan. 2) he turned the tables on that foe and seven others to score a decisive victory in the sixth race $30,000 featured trot.
Sent off as the even-money favorite, Melady's Monet was aggressively moved to the lead past an opening quarter of :28.1, before relinquishing the lead to Appomattox who reached the half-mile in :56.2 and three-quarters in 1:25.
In the stretch Appomattox was spent and drifted off the pylons allowing Melady's Monet to rally up the pylons to score impressively in 1:52.4.
The win was one of four on the card for driver Tim Tetrick and marked the fourth win in five starts for Melady's Monet. The winning trainer was Kevin McDermott for owners Melady Enterprises LLC.
