Explosive Matter Defeated In Italy

Milan, IT--Explosive Matter with Ron Pierce went offstride after the first quarter in the Gran Premio Orsi Mangell Final at San Siro in Italy--effectively ending the race for the American-bred trotter.

Instead the other elim winner, Italian-bred Mago d’Amoire, driven by Pietro Gubellini, won the final in 1.56.3f after a battle with long-leading Swedish trotter, Oracle, driven by Orjan Kilhström. The purse for the winner was $175,000.

Pierce picked up a drive in the Orsi Mangelli Filly behind Mordida Bar, who finished third.

The Filly Stakes was won very easily by the favorite Madras driven by G Lombardo. Madras won the Italian Oaks recently and is considered  the best 3-year-old Italian filly.

Explosive Matter wins elimination

It was just a walk in the park for Adam Victor & Son’s Explosive Matter and Ron Pierce in the first elimination in the prestigious Italian trotting race, Gran Premio Orsi Mangelli at San Siro at Milan. He will start from post 2 in the final.

Pierce took Explosive Matter easy from start but at the half mile he made his move and took over the lead before the quarter mile.

In a hand drive from Pierce Explosive Matter won in 1.56f by 1 1/2 lengths followed by Swedens Oracle, while ex-pat and formed Trond Smedshammer-trained Mystro Hanover took third.

The purse for the winner was $34,000 – Explosive Matter was the heavy favorite and paid 3/10 as winner.

In the other elimination, Pierce was unable to qualify Lindy Farms' Copy Catch, who went off stride.
