Scarlet Turgot heroic winner
of the Prix de CornulierThe 10-year old French mare, Scarlet Turgot with Alexandre Abrivard in the saddle, fought heroically to win the world’s richest under saddle race, the Prix de Cornulier, raced over 1 11/16 mile Sunday (January 24) afternoon at Vincennes.
Scarlet Turgot was early in command and had to defend her lead several times. Down the stretch she looked to be a sure winner, but Astor de Quenne with Adrien Lamy finished strongly, but didn’t managed to catch Scarlet Turgot, who won by a neck in 1.57.2 (mile rate).
This was the third time in a row, that a mare wins this prestigious trotting event.
The purse for the winner was $315,000 Euro, or $340,000 USD, bringing Scarlet Turgot’s lifetimes earning over 1 million Euro.
For 22- year old Alexandre Abrivard the victory in the Prix de Cornulier is the biggest in his career, and he follows his father, Laurent-Claude Abrivard, who won this event in 1992.
A cousin, Mathieu Abrivard has won the Prix de Cornulier three times in a row, riding the fabulous Jag de Bellouet.
Scarlet Turgot is trained by Yannick Alain Briand, who is one of the leading trainers in France.
8,807 fans were at Vincennes Sunday afternoon.
