Indiana champion Msnaughtybynature dies Msnaughtybynature, whose 22 career victories in her two years of racing included four Indiana Sires Stakes championships, died March 12, 2015, at Black Creek Farm in Grabill, Ind., at the age of eight. According to Black Creek Farm's John Schmucker, Msnaughtybynature was in foal to Guccio and was 30 days from foaling when she attempted to foal, but she aborted the foal. Msnaughtybynature was later found dead. Msnaughtybynature was owned over her racing career by Peter and Melanie Wrenn and Al Kowalewski's The Kales Company. Trained and driven by Peter Wrenn, Msnaughtynature dominated her Indiana peers over her career, never finishing worse than third. Never leaving the Hoosier State, Msnaughtbynature had career earnings of $642,044. She finished her career on an eight-race win streak, including her career-best effort of 1:56 at Indiana Downs. She was named the 2010 Trotter of the Year in Indiana. "She was quite a lady,” remembered Kowalewski's wife, Tekla Young. "This is just devastating, because to get a horse like her again…It's funny how an animal can have so much love. Sometimes it's not about the wins, it's about the love for the animal, and we all fell in love with her. She will be greatly missed and I will never take her picture down.” A daughter of Scramble Ranger out of the Pine Chip mare Miss Naughty Pine, Msnaughtybynature was bred by Denise Dennis. She was purchased by the Wrenns and The Kales Company in June 2009. "Pete Wrenn saw her as a yearling when they were working her out, and he called Al and said he wanted to buy her,” remembered Young. "Al said to go ahead. We bought her and the rest is history with her.” At the conclusion of her racing career, Msnaughtybynature was sold at the 2010 Harrisburg mixed sale, where she was purchased for $115,000 by Black Creek Farm and Ben Schmucker, with Maumee River Stable, Randy Day and John Wittmer also owning an interest. "When the Schmuckers bought her we got very close to them, and now we own two of her babies,” said Young. Msnaughtybynature's first foal, a colt since renamed Naughty II, purchased by The Kales Company for $35,000, made just two starts last year as a 2-year-old and is in the barn of trainer Erv Miller. The second foal, a filly renamed Naughty III, was the Indiana Premier Yearling Sale sales topper last year with a price of $63,000. Naughty III is being trained by Wrenn. She also has a yearling colt by Here Comes Herbie. |
