Mohawk carded the $150,000 Armbro
Flight Invitational for trotting mares.
Cameron Hall cut all of the fractions, but Malabar Mist and driver Chris
Christoforou were there when it counted. The duo got more than just the lion's
share of the purse, they also set a track and Canadian record of 1:53.2.
The panels were :27, :56 and 1:24.4, but after sitting third along the rail,
Christoforou and the daughter of Malabar Man-Gleam manufactured some daylight
and made the most of it. Propelling through the narrow opening, Malabar Mist
darted to the wire, taking a full second off the track record set (1:54.2) by
Lost Lady One earlier in the year. Moni Maker and Dresden Dolly previously held
the Canadian record of 1:53.3, which both were recorded at Woodbine.
"I was sitting third on the rail and I was debating whether to move her or not,"
said Christoforou, about Malabar Mist near the half-mile marker. "I thought,
with a bit of luck here at Mohawk, a lot of times things open up late, so we
were lucky enough that it did and she had a lot of pop left. When you can save
her energy like that until the end she really does explode. We are looking
forward to a big winter from her."
Paying $11.70 for her third score in nine starts this year, the Charalambos
Christoforou pupil raised her 2003 bankroll to $120,920 for L And L Devisser LLC
of Michigan. Windylane Hanover closed late for second ahead of Cameron Hall.
The Malvern Burroughs-bred now has career earnings of $346,714.
