In a thrilling finish, Maven was able to collar 17-1 Check Me Out and win the $76,000 Allerage Farms Mares Trot by a nose in 1:52.3 over a sloppy track Sunday at the Red Mile.
Real Babe and driver Dave Miller left from the gate to take the early lead as Check Me Out and Tim Tetrick came on the outside and took command at the opening quarter mile in :27.4. Once on top of the field, Check Me Out led the group to the half mile marker in :55 and to the three-quarters in 1:23.3 as Maven had started up first-over with Bax Of Life (John Campbell) second over.
Coming down the stretch, Check Me Out dug in and battled neck and neck with Maven but could not hold her off in the final strides to the wire as Maven won by a nose after a photo finish. Bax Of Life was third.
Maven wins for eighth time this year for trainer Jonas Czernyson. The four-year-old mare by Glidemaster is owned by W J. Donovan of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and paid $3.20 to win as the betting favorite.
