Imperial Count (Scott Zeron) blasted to the lead in the early going and took his rivals past the opening panel in a quick 26.4. Sim Brown (Randy Waples) angled from third and took over command, but made a break in stride allowing Imperial Count to inherit the lead once again.
Jamieson then called upon Mister Herbie and the son of Here Comes Herbie-Independent Lassie brushed to the lead past the half in 56. The post time favorite, Daylon Magician (Jack Moiseyev), began the first-over bid around the final turn, but was not matching strides with the tempo-setter past three-quarters in 1:24.
Jamieson asked Mister Herbie for more trot at the head of the lane and the seven-time winner opened up on his rivals to score a comfortable 8-1/2-length win for trainer Jeff Gillis, who co-owns with Mac Nichol and Gerald Stay. Imperial Count stayed for second, over Daylon Magician.
"He's always shown that he's had the talent, but he was just a little late putting it together," Nichol said following the victory. "Carl Jamieson was running this horse through the sale and Jeff [Gillis] called him before and we bought him, which worked out well."
Mister Herbie now has lifetime earnings of $272,403.
He paid $8.90 to win.
