GooGoo GaaGaa wins Colonial Trot Corey Callahans fist pumps
and waves to the large crowd at Harrahs Philadelphia following
Googoo Gaagaas win in Sunday's (Aug. 19) $500,000 Colonial gave an
indication how he felt about his horses victory.
Afterward in the winners circle, the driver said he was happy to show harness racings fans that the 3-year-old trotter was back in form following breaks last month in the Yonkers Trot at Yonkers Raceway and a division of the Stanley Dancer Memorial at Meadowlands Racetrack.
Its a little bit of redemption, Callahan said after Googoo Gaagaa held off Hambletonian champion Market Share in a stakes- and track-record 1:52.1. There were a lot of naysayers the last time we were walking back from the front paddock at the Meadowlands. A lot of people have been betting a lot of money on this horse, hes been the favorite every time hes raced up until today, and with those couple breaks a lot of people lost their money.
I dont blame them for saying some of the comments that they did, but hes the best 3-year-old trotter out there. I dont think you can take anything away from him.
The Colonial was part of a Super Stakes Sunday card worth a total of $2.7 million at Harrahs Philadelphia. Other major stakes winners were A Rocknroll Dance in the $500,000 Battle of the Brandywine, Romantic Moment in the $350,000 Valley Forge and Chapter Seven in the $150,000 Maxie Lee Memorial Invitational.
Googoo Gaagaa was bred by Richard Hans, who also owns and trains the colt. Googoo Gaagaa was sired by a pacer, Cams Rocket, but has found success on the trot, setting multiple world records and winning 13 of 16 lifetime races.
In the Colonial, Googoo Gaagaa was sent off at 2-1 odds, tied for second choice with Market Share behind the Jimmy Takter entry of Little Brown Fox, Guccio and Uncle Peter.
Little Brown Fox and driver Yannick Gingras took the early lead from post 4, with Market Share second and Googoo Gaagaa third. Callahan moved Googoo Gaagaa to the outside on the second turn and gradually worked his way alongside Little Brown Fox as the field reached the top of the stretch.
Market Share, driven by Tim Tetrick, came with late trot on the inside, but Googoo Gaagaa fought off the challenge after taking the lead from Little Brown Fox.
My plan was just to let Goo do what he wanted, Callahan said. He was just kind of taking his time there early; I felt Yannick was going to leave out of there and try to control the race. I was perfectly content getting away where I did and not really rushing him. I didnt really have to move until the second turn, so that helped a lot.
I thought I was kind of in the clear (in the stretch) and then Tetrick came with a pretty good move. I gave Goo a couple extra taps and away he went. I think he thought he had it won too because he had his chest puffed out like, yeah I got this.
Callahan was unconcerned about Googoo Gaagaa spending time parked first over.
Goo has such a long stride and he does it so effortlessly that, to be honest, I really didnt want anybody to be in my way, Callahan said. I just wanted to be able to let him trot and do his thing. It worked out good today.
