2018 Breeders Crown Night Complete
Breeders Crown night is now in the books with the 12 championship finals
taking place under less-than-ideal conditions at The Downs at Mohegan
Sun Pocono in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Mcwicked Kicks Butt In Crown
It was one of those ‘no doubt about it’ scores for Mcwicked, who
steamrolled over the sport’s top older pacing horses in the $430,000
Breeders Crown Open Pace for the duo of driver Brian Sears and trainer
Casie Coleman.
Mcwicked got away fourth in the early going while Filibuster Hanover
hustled out from the rail to take the field to the opening quarter in
:26.1. Lazarus N got away third, but he was on the move as the field
passed the grandstand for the first time. Lazarus N cleared easily and
had the group chasing him to the half in :55.2.
Mcwicked started his first-over rally on the way to the half, and he
quickly got right up in the grill of Lazarus N as the field reached the
mid-way point of the backstretch. Mcwicked easily muscled past Lazarus N
and opened up a big lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:22.2. A :27.1
final frame sealed the deal for Mcwicked, who drew clear to win easily
over Filibuster Hanover in 1:49.3. Donttellmeagain nabbed the third
prize.
“He’s real easy to drive and he does everything you want. It’s great to
have the opportunity to drive such nice horses,” said Sears, who won
three Breeders Crown races Saturday night.
Owned by Ed James’ S S G Stables of North Boston, NY, the seven-year-old
son of Mcardle-Western Sahara picked up his 10th win of the year from 17
trips to the track. The 32-time winner boosted his lifetime bankroll to
$3,868,195 with the victory.
“I always think he’s gonna be good, but to think he is going to do what
he did this year... I think he is better now than he was at three,”
explained trainer Casie Coleman. “He is a big team effort no doubt. I
hope he is going to race next year, but that is not my call. It is up to
Mr. James (owner Ed James of the SSG Stables.) I think he will be at
stud, but I hope he will race, our team would really like that.”
Dominant
Performance For Dorsoduro Hanover
They weren’t going to beat Dorsoduro Hanover tonight in the $530,000
Breeders Crown Three-Year-Old Colt Pace, not if they went around the
Pocono Downs oval again.
This Is The Plan and the parked out American History sped past the
quarter pole in :26.1 before the latter cleared to the top. Dorsoduro
Hanover and Matt Kakaley made a snap move out of the three-hole as the
field moved in front of the grandstand, and in a matter of strides the
Ron Burke pupil found himself in charge of the tempo.
Dorsoduro Hanover rolled the group across the backstretch before
breaking the beam of the teletimer at the three-quarter pole in 1:21.3.
He then used a :28.1 final frame to win in convincing fashion over
Lather Up and This Is The Plan. The 1:49.4 clocking matched the
gelding’s lifetime mark.
The son of Somebeachsomewhere-Deer Valley Miss is now a 10-time winner
this season and a 12-time winner to date for the partnership of Burke
Racing Stable LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Wingfield Five. The victory
pushed his lifetime earnings to $1,256,856.
Shartin N Goes The Distance
Tim Tetrick pressed the pedal early with Shartin N in the $270,000
Breeders Crown Mare Pace, and the Jim King, Jr. trainee rolled to a
gutsy score in 1:52 despite feeling pressure for much off the mile.
Shartin N blasted out from Post 2 and successfully sliced out fractions
of :26.1, :54.3 and 1:23 before finishing off her foes with a :29-second
closing quarter. She stopped the clock in 1:52 to defeat Caviart Ally
and Pure Country.
Sent off as the 1-2 favourite, the five-year-old daughter of Tintin In
America-Bagdarin improved her 2018 record to 18-1-0 from 23 trips to the
track this season. The 25-time winner has banked $1,089,280 for owners
Richard Poillucci or North Easton, MA and Joann Looney King of
Harrington, DE.
Johansson
Trainee Comes Through In The ‘Crunch’
The trip was sweet and the payday turned out to be even sweeter for
Captain Crunch who collared Proof in the stretch to capture the $600,000
Breeders Crown Two-Year-Old Colt Pace for the tandem of driver Scott
Zeron and trainer Nancy Johansson.
Captain Crunch got away in good order for Zeron, who sat second behind
Blood Money through an opening quarter clocked in :26.4. Zeron slipped
to the front end with Captain Crunch as the field passed in front of the
grandstand, but the lead proved to be a short-lived one.
Proof was on the move, as well, and he brushed to the top going into the
turn. Proof then laid down middle panels of :55.1 and 1:23.2. Proof was
still the leader turning into the lane, but Captain Crunch was full of
pace as he re-emerged from the pocket spot. Captain Crunch sailed past
Proof and handily defeated that foe in a sharp clocking of 1:51.3. Love
Me Some Lou rounded out the Trifecta ticket.
It was the fifth win of the season from eight attempts for the son of
Captaintreacherous-Sweet Paprika, who is owned by 3 Brothers Stables,
Christina Takter, Rojan Stables and Caviart Farms. The $300,000 payday
helped the youngster bump his bankroll to $404,725.
Percy Bluechip Plays Giant
Killer
Percy Bluechip parlayed a ground-saving trip into a 50-1 upset in the
$500,000 Breeders Crown Three-Year-Old Filly Pace for driver Matt
Kakaley, who owes drivers Yannick Gingras and Scott Zeron a dinner date
on him.
After all, it was Gingras and Zeron who battled through insane fractions
to set the table for Kakaley and O’Brien Award winner Percy Bluechip.
Percy Bluechip tucked into the pocket while Youaremycandygirl motored to
the lead and supplied a vicious opening quarter clocked in :25.3. She
continued to lead the way, but pressure came from the parked out Kissin
In The Sand. Those two battled tooth and nail through wild middle
fractions of :53.3 and 1:22.2 before being overhauled in the lane by the
rallying Percy Bluechip. She kicked home to win in 1:51.1 over a dead
game Kissin In The Sand. Taking home the show dough was Dance Blue.
Ron Burke trains the late-season acquisition for Burke Racing Stable
LLC, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Purnel And Libby LLC and Donald Emond. It was
the fifth win of the year – and the 10th to date – for the career winner
of $960,829.
A-Plus Effort From Warrawee
Ubeaut
Harness racing's fastest freshman pacer Warrawee Ubeaut cemented her
status as the 'it-girl' in the two-year-old pacing filly ranks with a
gutsy performance in her division's $600,000 Breeders Crown Final.
A brisk flow emerged early in this race with a number of early lead
changes. Zero Tolerance (David Miller) was out and driving to clear
through a :26.2 openign quarter but that lead was short-lived as St
Somewhere (Matt Kakaley) and Warrawee Ubeaut (Yannick Gingras) were
advancing as the field passed in front of the grandstand. St Somewhere
cleared just before the :54.2 half, with Warrawee Ubeaut driving on to
clear heading into the backstretch.
As the field approached the five-eighths mark, Prescient Beauty (Doug
McNair) was left first up after Warrawee Ubeaut cleared. Prescient
Beauty kept advancing through a sharp 1:22.4 third station and as the
field turned for home Warrawee Ubeaut looked vulnerable. A spirited
stretch drive ensued, with Prescient Beauty not packing it in and Zero
Tolerance left-lining to challenge up the passing lane. But Warrawee
Ubeaut stayed dead game and held off her rivals for a hard-fought 1:52.3
victory over the off track.
Zero Tolerance nosed out Prescient Beauty for place honours.
"She's a gutsy filly, honestly the only thing that got her beat last
week was a bad drive," driver Gingras said in the winner's circle after
the win. "I drove her as bad as a guy could drive a horse. I told the
girl that takes care of her -- she does a great job -- I told her, don't
worry about it. If you draw a good post I'll get the job done in the
final. I only told her, I'm not as ballsy as David Miller and tell the
whole world but I was very confident in the filly."
Trained by Ron Burke, Warrawee Ubeaut now sports a 7-1-1 summary from 11
seasonal starts for Burke Racing Stable LLC, Phillip Collura, J&T Silva
Purnel & Libby, and Weaver Bruscemi LLC. The filly was bred in Ontario
by Warrawee Farm of Rockwood. The win lifted her bankroll to $602,393.
Burke picked up his 14th Breeders Crown, taking sole possession of third
in the series' trainer standings.
