Luck Be Withyou (2) came charging late to win the Breeders Crown 2-year-old colt pace in 1:52 on a sloppy track on Saturday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.
Luck Be Withyou gets up in time in Crown freshman male pace
A hard charging Luck Be Withyou and driver Ron Pierce came charging late to win the $500,000 Breeders Crown for 2year-old pacing colts on Saturday evening at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The winning time was 1:52 on a sloppy track.

Luck Be Withyou passed Sometimes Said (John Campbell) by a neck in the final strides. Somestarsomewhere (Yannick Gingras) was third.

Luck Be Withyou is owned by John Craig of North York, Ontario and trained by Chris Oakes in the U.S. for his Canadian-based trainer, Bill Cass.

Right at the start, Sometimes Said and John Campbell blasted off the gate from post nine to get the lead for the first time, but Somestarsomewhere (Yannick Gingras) took over the lead from him past the :27 quarter. He kept that lead to the :55.1 half and the 1:22.4 three-quarters, with Luck Be Withyou at his back the whole way.

When the field turned for home, So Surreal (Tim Tetrick), on the move from seventh at the half, was bidding for the lead, but made a break as the field straightened for home and lost all chance. In the deep stretch, John Campbell, whod been just off the leaders, dropped Sometimes Said into the passing lane to advance on Somestarsomewhere.

Luck Be Withyou was the strongest of the trio to the wire for the win, his third in the last four starts. Sometimes Said was second and Somestarsomewhere third.

The horse is a really good horse, said Chris Oakes. It wasnt too much on my end, really, most of the credit goes right here (pointing to Bill Cass).

I really liked the way it developed, a lot of early action. We ended up getting a great two hole trip behind the other elimination winner and the horse got the job done. I was very happy with the end result.

Cass was elated in the winners circle.

I feel great, he said. We bought a great horse and he ended up being what we thought he was. I was pretty confident. I was a little worried with the weather, but it turned out OK. Weather doesnt bother this horse. Hes been a great horse since we broke him.

My colt gave forth a great effort, said John Campbell, the driver of runner-up Sometimes Said. He always tries hard and has been super all year long. The other horse just beat us, and my horse was as game as they come.

Uffizi Hanover is an upset winner in Crown 2-year-old filly pace
Uffizi Hanover turned a second-over trip into a three-quarter length victory in the $500,000 Breeders Crown final for 2-year-old filly pacers in 1:52.1 Saturday night (Oct. 19) at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

Driven by David Miller, the daughter of Well Said-Up Front Dragonfly sat fourth as Precocious Beauty and Allstar Rating mixed it up through a first quarter in :25.3. After Precocious Beauty assumed the lead in the homestretch for the first time, Miller tipped Uffizi Hanover, flushing Act Now from third to the half in :55. Act Now stalked the leader with Uffizi Hanover on her helmet through three-quarters in 1:23.

When Precocious Beauty began to tire at the top of the stretch, Allstar Rating shot up the rail, but Uffizi Hanover was in the midst of a successful three-wide sweep to get the win, followed by Beach Body and Southwind Silence from off the pace.

Trainer Jimmy Takter picked up his second consecutive Breeders Crown trophy after winning the 2-year-old cott Trot final with Father Patrick. The $100,000 yearling purchase was bred by Hanover Shoe Farms and co-owned by Al Libfeld, Marvin Katz and Sam Goldband, who also co-owned Father Patrick.

Im flying high, said Goldband. We had high hopes for Father Patrick. We had good hopes for this filly and she just came through. She had a perfect trip and we are just absolutely delighted.

Miller is being inducted into the Harness Racing Living Hall of Fame in July 2014, most likely by giving trips like these on the biggest stages.

It was a second-over trip and she had cover right there coming off the last turn and she fired home, he said. I liked her chances a lot. She was good last week, but she was a little bit rough. Jimmy took care of that and it was all systems go.

Owner Katz gave a special thanks to Takters son in the winners circle after the race.

I want to say special thanks to J.J., Jimmys son, who drove her all summer for us, he said. He did the dirty work and helped her develop. He really deserves a lot of the credit.

Uffizi Hanover, who now has two wins and five seconds in 11 lifetime starts, good for $361,390 in purse earnings, paid $10.20 to win as the third wagering choice.

Captaintreacherous does it again; holds off Sunshine Beach in Crown victory
Captaintreacherous did it again.

Captaintreacherous won for the sixth consecutive time, holding off Sunshine Beach in the stretch to win the $500,000 Breeders Crown for 3-year-old male pacers by a neck in 1:49.2 over a sloppy track Saturday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Lucan Hanover finished third.

The colt has won by a neck five times this season.

Every time I race the horse I think its his finest moment and then he gives me another one, trainer Tony Alagna said. I think the horse just continues to impress.

I thought once he got to the front hed be very tough to beat. People want to talk about the what ifs and I like to talk about the whats happened. Every time it looks like theyre going to get to him, they say if I just had one more step, but they never get by him.

Captaintreacherous left from post one and took the early lead before briefly yielding the top spot to Sunfire Blue Chip as the field hit the opening quarter in :26.1. Driver Tim Tetrick reclaimed the lead quickly and led the pacers to a :55.2 half and 1:22.1 three-quarters.

Sunshine Beach, the only horse to defeat Captaintreacherous this year, made a first-over challenge and closed in on Captaintreacherous as they neared the wire, but he could never get past.

Captaintreacherous, who was the 2012 Pacer of the Year, finished third in last seasons Breeders Crown.

This definitely makes up for it, said Myron Bell, who is one of the horses owners and manages the Captaintreacherous Racing ownership group. This is a tremendous victory. I thank Tony and Timmy and all my partners.

The Breeders Crown is the culmination of the year; this is a championship race. All the great 3-year-olds were here and he defeated them. Naturally its a highlight.

Captaintreacherous is a nose from being undefeated this season. His other wins include the $980,000 North America Cup, $635,750 Meadowlands Pace, $500,000 Max C. Hempt Memorial, $360,211 Cane Pace and a $215,500 division of the Tattersalls Pace.

Sunshine Beach handed a first-over Captaintreacherous his only loss by a nose in the $500,000 Battle of the Brandywine in a world-record-equaling 1:47.4 mile.

Captaintreacherous has won 12 of 13 races this year, with earnings of $1,874,273.

Tetrick expected another battle in the Breeders Crown.

Its a horse race, Tetrick said. I knew it was going to be a sprint. Sunshine is a great horse. I knew it was going to be a race all the way to the wire, but my horse likes to win. I wanted to make sure I was in control and everybody knew it. I had to let one go and then remove and control my own destiny from there.

Captaintreacherous, 3-year-old filly trotter Bee A Magician, and 3-year-old filly pacer I Luv The Nitelife all won Breeders Crown titles Saturday night. The three are the top three horses in the sports Top 10 poll and the prime contenders for Horse of the Year.

Im going to let my horse speak for himself, Alagna said. I think its very tough as a voter to be able to decide who is a better horse as far as Horse of the Year.

I know were going to get criticized, I know were going to lose votes because we didnt go to the (Little Brown) Jug. Ill never apologize for not taking this horse to the Jug. I think the run hes gone on since then speaks for itself. I let my horse do the talking for me. He doesnt lose anything to me if he isnt Horse of the Year. Hes Horse of the Year to me.

I Luv The Nitelife rallies to Breeders Crown triumph
I Luv The Nitelife made it 12 consecutive wins with a powerful pocket-trip win in the $500,000 Breeders Crown final for 3-year-old filly pacers in 1:50 on Saturday night (Oct. 19) at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

Authorize was second with Aunt Caroline third.

As the gate folded, Aunt Caroline was the first away. I Luv The Nitelife, the 1-9 favorite, managed to clear to the lead past the quarter in a sharp :25.4, but immediately yielded to second choice Shebestingin. As the field passed the half-mile pole in :54.3, defending Breeders Crown champion Somwherovrarainbow came first-over, pushing Shebestingin to a three-quarter time of 1:21.4, with I Luv The Nitelife sitting chilly in the pocket the entire time.

Into the homestretch, driver Tim Tetrick pulled I Luv the Nitelife ($4.00) from the pocket to loop Shebestingin to win by 3-3/4 lengths.

Chris Ryder trains I Luv The Nitelife for co-owners Richard and Joanne Young. He sent a filly into the Breeders Crown final that hadnt raced since winning the Jugette on Sept. 18. The daughter of Rocknroll Hanover-Lisjune had qualified at Pocono on Oct. 3 and Oct. 10.

I think its fantastic; you know its been a long time between races; it seemed like an eternity, said Ryder. Shes a great horse and great horses do great things.

There were no suitable races, so we just qualified her. We didnt have her eligible for Kentucky, so she had no races.

I Luv The Nitelife came into the race with a single first-place vote in the Hambletonian/Breeders Crown poll behind Bee A Magician and Captaintreacherous, but Young still thinks his filly should be in the conversation for Horse of the Year. I Luv The Nitelife now sports a bankroll of $1,218,337 in 2013 with 13 wins in 14 starts. The win gives her $1,907,867 in purse earnings at ages 2 and 3, which vaults her past Put On A Show as the richest pacing filly at ages 2 and 3. Young also owned Put On A Show, the 2010 Breeders Crown champion.

I honestly believe that the 3-year-old pacing filly division is the toughest of the three divisions that each one races in, said Young. I have to admit that its not their fault that they are racing against easier competition, but when you are making a vote, you vote off the one that is most impressive.

MJG Racing Stables and Louis Willinger bred the champion filly.

Foiled Again prevailed at the wire to become the oldest horse ever to win a Breeders Crown in the Open Pace on Saturday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.
Foiled Again makes Breeders Crown history with Open Pace victory
The 9-year-old Foiled Again became the oldest horse to ever win a Breeders Crown when he held strong to the wire to win the $500,000 Breeders Crown for open class pacers on Saturday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

The $5.65 million now in his bank account makes him the richest pacer of all time and second richest Standardbred worldwide after Ready Cash. The victory was his ninth in 25 starts this year, with 2013 earnings of $1,024,109.

He was driven by Yannick Gingras to the win by a nose in 1:49.2 over the sloppy track. Pet Rock was second and Modern Legend was third.

Foiled Again is owned by Burke Racing, Weaver Bruscemi and JJK Stables and trained by Ron Burke.

Golden Receiver (Corey Callahan) was first off the starting gate and into the lead in :25.3, but by the :53.4 half, hed relinquished the lead to Foiled Again who held it to the 1:21.4 three-quarter-mile mark.

He was tracked by Modern Legend, third and on his wheel as the field turned for home and Pet Rock, who was second, behind Foiled Again and along the rail, waiting for the passing lane.

With Pet Rock inside and Modern Legend outside, Foiled Again ($3.80) dug in all the way down the stretch to stay ahead at the wire for the win by a nose.

He definitely fought him off, said Gingras. He fought them all off. They were coming from everywhere. I was doing my best to get him to go. He got it done tonight and I really, really love this horse. He was used really hard tonight. Thats the way the race played out. I know if theres any horse in history, or on the racetrack tonight, that you can use, hes definitely the man.

I knew that Jody (Jamieson, driving Warrawee Needy, who made a break on the last turn) was three deep coming off the last turn and his horse got a good trip too. I couldnt really see on the outside until right at the wire. I was doing my best to get him to go, thats for sure. He got it done tonight and I really, really love this horse. Hes been a pleasure to drive and hes definitely one of the greatest. Last week he was super sharp in the elimination and what can you say after this performance? If people dont rate him, if not the greatest, as one of the greatest in history, I dont know what else he has to do.

When he was moving back to the front, said trainer Ron Burke, I had confidence that David (Miller, driving Pet Rock) would have to let him go; theyd already gone a big half. From the top of the lane, I started thinking maybe Clear Vision was our better shot, but then you keep an eye on (Foiled Again) and he just keeps digging. He wouldnt let him by. He saved the night. Hes been unbelievable. I cant say enough about him and what hes done for our family and for our whole stable.

Burke said that Foiled Agains next start is expected to be Nov. 9 in the American-National at Balmoral Park in Illinois.

Shelliscape (7) overcame Rockclamation in the Breeders Crown Mare Pace on Saturday at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.
Shelliscape is 1:50 winner in Breeders Crown Mare Pace
Shelliscape ground out a 1:50 win in the $300,000 Breeders Crown final for older mare pacers Saturday night (Oct. 19) at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs.

Feeling You was first away from the gate, but yielded to Anndrovette at the quarter in :26.3. As the field swung into the clubhouse turn toward the half-mile marker, Shelliscape and driver David Miller were out and moving, looking for cover from seventh.

They found live cover in Rocklamation, whom driver Yannick Gingras announced on Twitter that he was going to get her attention tonight. He must have succeeded, because after the half in :54.1, Rocklamation cleared over Anndrovette, who was shooting for an unprecedented third consecutive Breeders Crown win.

I took back and then came early and came hard and got Yannick out, which was perfect, said Miller after the race. When he cleared I was a little nervous, but my mare was still going forward. Shes just all guts.

When she cleared, that left Shelliscape without cover, but the 4-year-old Artiscape-Shell I Scoot mare didnt mind, as she continued to gain steady ground on the leader, winning by a neck. Rocklamation was second with Anndrovette third.

It was the second Breeders Crown win on the night for Miller, who also scored with Uffizi Hanover in the 2-year-old filly pace final. He was high on this mare, to say the least.

She raced awesome last week and came back with a very big mile tonight, said Miller. All I can do is praise her.

P.J. Fraley trains Shelliscape for Bamond Racing LLC, who also co-owns Anndrovette. Midland Acres Inc. of Ohio bred the mare. Shelliscape ($10.20) has won four of 16 starts this year with earnings of $274,308.

Id have liked to have seen Anndrovette win just to get her third one, but Shelliscape was so good last week that I almost felt like she earned it last week, said Jeffery Bamond, Jr. Last weeks trip kind of earned this one for her tonight.

There was a lot of action. Drop The Ball broke and shes always so tough, and on a five-eighths shes scary fast. It was a good trip, although we kind of got left first-over, but she just kept grinding it out.
